Update Time!

Woah, its been a while!

Still at Baidawei for the foreseeable future at least and Changchun certainly hasn't disinterested me in the least. Obviously feelings of missing out on family back home, with one of my sisters soon to be married! As well as missing out on the day to day lives and goings on of people back in England.
Baidawei school in Changchun has been a great experience so far and im glad to have met the many teachers who have worked here, and continue to do so as well.

Yesterday was the celebration in China of the 60th anniversary of communist rule and judging by all the parade and the pictures, as well as the Tv coverage, im sure it was a lavish and costly affair indeed, to show the rest of the world as well as the population.

Shaun, my son, still isn't talking yet- apart from his own language, but with English, Chinese and Tagalog around him, it must be a bit difficult! That said, he is growing well, with Chinese people often surprised with how young he is, yet being quite tall.

On The Move

We are still staying in Changchun, and ill be working for Baidawei for another six months- but weve decided to move to a better apartment. Weve moved most of our things already! Also it will be less costly too so thats a plus!

My new schedule for teaching is pretty good- some classes merged and have two new 1A classes and still on full hours which is great.

A few new computer games are coming out which ill like to get soon- Killzone 2, Demon souls and Resident Evil 5- all for the PS3. The most anticipated is Resident Evil 5- should be pretty awesome.  Aston Villa are doing great things in the league at the moment, just hope we can maintain the position for a Champions league spot.

Update Time

Oh, i need to start getting better at blogging!

To be honest, i spend most of the time on Facebook, the name is David Emmerson Nicholson, if you want to add me thats fine. So September was the last time i updated here and now its February!

Well, Laarni and her mom, my son Shaun and some of Laarnis friends went back to the Phillipines in December and will be back on the 17th February. Shaun has been a bit unwell over there and had to be in the hospital a while too, but seems to have gotten better now. He has grown up so much already now. Ive missed them both a lot.

Fortunately we have friends who have been looking after me so well, living here with me at the moment as i work at Baidawei in Changchun. We are in the middle of Intensives again and its hard work but hopefully the children are having fun and learning with us! Teaching with Baidawei has certainly been a great experience for me, ive enjoyed teaching my classes and meeting different people and friends too.

We are pretty settled here in Changchun, but there is a big decision to be made for us in May when my contract ends about what we, as a family, want to do.

Also im sad ,to be honest, that family back home are moving on with their lives and growing up! My little sisters arent so little anymore and have children of their own which are rapidly ageing too! Obviously thats part of life, and is expected.

On lighter aspects, my football team, Aston Villa, are flying high in the Premiership and exceeding any expecations people had made of them to do this year- including mine!

Time For An Update

Wow, long time since ive been on here!

So many things have occurred- The Olympics have been and gone, Shaun has gotten older and life here in China is good. Teaching at Baidawei, with my classes, is getting along fine too.

We had our Olympic Intensive, which is just a lot more hours teaching with an Olympic flavour to it for a month. For two weeks we would teach a bunch of children, then a performance for their parents on Day 10 (no classes on sat/sun- regular classes instead), then a new batch of children for the other two weeks. Theres been a  few adjustments to my teaching schedule as in time of classes,  but im still on full hours and thats what counts! Its been noticeable in classes that children are really learning which make me happy, shows im doing it right!

Shaun has grown rapidly- he is now one year two months old and mobile! Yes, he can walk unaided and run a little too. Sometimes he falls but he is getting better at steadying himself. Over the next few months he will probably start speaking too, apart from Dada and mama he can say at the moment. Maybe having English, Tagalog and Chinese voices around him might be a bit too much, but could stand him in good stead for the future!

Ive seen pictures of family back home and their children and its nice and also a little sad to see everyone growing up so much- im missing a lot of things back home but thats the way it is. Hopefully the future can see me returning for a while to visit family.

A Welcome Break

Well, its still very cold here in Changchun and tomorrow its the start of the Spring Festival. I am now on a holiday for 12 days or so and it is very welcome! We have just finished intensives plus our regular classes, so am very tired! The theme of the Intensives was The Sea, so for the classes they learned different animals and learned songs and performances to show their parents at the end of two weeks. Then another batch of intensives and children for two weeks had to do the same.

So i now have a PS3, obviously much cheaper than back home in England!, also have Ninja Gaiden Sigma (very hard game) and Winning Eleven 2008. Planning to get Devil May Cry 4 and Dynasty Warriors 6 as well soon. Need to get a HDTV to get the best out of the PS3- they are probably expensive but not as much as back home in England. I Havent been to the DVD shop in AGES, so ive probably got a lot of films to catch up on!

Aston Villa didnt sign anyone really, apart from Wayne Routledge, which was very disappointing as we have a small squad and injuries/suspension could end up being a problem as the season go on.

As for Shaun he is over six months now and growing very well! He is still shrieking and shouting loud- but no words yet apart from mumbling! He can roll over as it were, so you have to be careful not to take your eyes off him!

The Iceman Cometh

A few days ago it snowed here in Changchun, and pretty much the temperature has dropped and so the cold creeps into our lives. As a Londoner, who hasnt seen snow for years, its a welcome change but also time for the heaters to come on as well! As those who know me, ive been pretty silent in respect to emails and such, however our internet has only been recently fixed and is soooooooo slow at the moment as well.

Shaun is precisely four months old now! Wow the time flies doesnt it? It looks like his first teeth are starting to come through and he has this peculiar habit of what can only be described as shrieking as loud as he can and in varying levels of pitch and volume! Im still hoping his first words will be Dada or Daddy, however im pretty sure his first word will be a Tagalog word due to the welcome care that our Filipino friends provide, such as Bituin and Ronna, and Laarni of course as well! She is eager to get back to work and is hoping her mother can come to China and look after Shaun so we can both work. His sleeping pattern seems to have changed and we are thinking about maybe giving him a change in what he can eat as well as it is now four months.

England got knocked out of the qualification round for Euro 2008 and to be honest we deserved it. Its time to face facts that we arent as great a football team as we think we are and maybe this is the kick up the proverbial backside that the FA and English football need. Ive already read that blame is being put on foreigners playing in England which is utter rubbish. If English players are good enough, whatever their age, they will get picked for their football team regardless.

They Say Children Grow Up Fast....

Shaun is now over a month old, however as you can see by the picture he sure is growing up fast! Hes quite energetic and has a very cute smile and laugh as well! He doesnt seem to sleep that much as if he wants to be involved in everything. He does drink his milk though- a lot! Even when he cries, its not really that loud either but its because he is sleepy or wanting another bottle of milk.

Laarni is recovering well from the cesarean and has already been up and about for a long time looking after Shaun and our friends are always on hand to take care of the baby as well.

No longer working at the Kindergarden, which is a bit of a relief- as Im now focusing on the BaiDaWei branch where Im the only teacher. The classes and the children are great, with excellent help from the Chinese teaching assistants that are based at my branch as well.

Monday 23rd July 4.25 in the Afternoon

It may seem like an odd title but when I explain what it means and how it is a special day for me and Laarni from now on, you will understand!

Laarni gave birth to our baby son and everything went well. It was a quick birth with it being a cesarean, however Laarni will have to recover for a time from the operation.  A Filipina and an Englishman having a child will probably raise eyebrows and it certainly did in the hospital. Naturally everyone- the Chinese doctors, patients and visitors- were all very curious to see what a foreign baby looked like and they seemed very happy about everything!

Our friends and the Chinese people who saw the baby say he looks like me- I think he looks like Yoda, but most babies do anyway!  He is quite big but also tall as well- due to the fact that he was actually supposed to be born on the 3rd of July so he is 20 days overdue!

Rain, Sun, Hot and Humid

The title pretty much sums up the weather here in Changchun at the moment- very interchangeable indeed. Teaching is going great. I was doing a lot of teaching every week but its been cut down to around 18 hours a week now with my time split between 12.5 hours at a Kindergarden and 6 hours at the school i teach for the company. I wont lie- its hard work. You have to be very active, patient but the rewards are there to see in the children's faces.  My time with the company, as ive said before, is really good. The teachers, Chinese assistant teachers and the children themselves are great.

Anytime soon , my girlfriend will give birth to a baby boy. Definitely this month- maybe in the next week or so. We are both very excited about the new addition to the family- Now to think of a name for the little man! We havent really decided on one yet!

As a side note- if Ryan is reading this. I picked up a copy of both Audition and Ichi the Killer from Gui Lin Lu! They were both the proper editions. He will hate me for that! You can get many Dvds here in China, a lot faster than back home (So much so that films just released in cinemas seem to find there way into Chinese dvd shops- but we wont talk about that!)  Sometimes the quality is not good but you are only paying a few RMB here and there anyway!

Its Getting Hot In Here....

China has begun to warm up which isnt a bad thing. Time for a new wardrobe I think. Im not really sure of my schedule over the summer but hopefully ill be able to enjoy it- im sure theyll be time.

So Ive been with the company just under three weeks and im loving it at the school im at. At the moment ive covering the schedules of teachers who have a break for two weeks. Ill be doing this for around three more weeks I think- then Ill be put somewhere else. I havent had any problems with the teachers or the students. The children are eager to learn. Teaching is very different to that in England. Here in China you have to be part entertainer as well. Thats not to say you dont impart knowledge etc, youve just got to do it that much more subconsciously to them. Hehe!

May 4 has come and past with me turning one year older and my friends and I celebrated it very nicely in one of the big parks that are here in Changchun. It was a hot day so we decided to go to the park for a while to have a picnic and some barbecue - there were loads of people there!

I should get paid in the next week, plus the company have told me that theyll pay a small portion of the rent Laarni and I pay where we live. Its a great appartment, in the centre of all the places we can get to - restaurants, schools, supermarkets etc.

May Holiday

The company I work for started a week break on Saturday til May 5th so cant complain about that! As I said before the other teachers at the school where I am, plus the Chinese assistant teachers and also the management of the company are really very good people! Im looking forward to working with them and of course the children ill be teaching too.

I watched 300 a few days or so ago and thought it was excellent. The battle scenes were tremendous, even if some people complain about the rendered backdrops or it being filmed on bluescreen, it doesnt detract from the quality film it is. It makes you want to be a Spartan doesnt it? Hehe! Hmm where did i leave Spartan: Total Warrior? Might have to replay that again! Currently playing Pro Evolution Soccer 6, which I manage to play with friends when I can. Also when I have spare time I continue replaying Final Fantasy XII and Kingdom Hearts 2! Not too sure about Revenant Wings spinoff of FFXII though but im holding out hope Square Enix make Kingdom Hearts 2 Final Mix and bring it over to Europe.

Concerning Laarni and her pregnant state- I dont think I can quite explain the feelings when I feel the baby move - I suppose only those that have been through the situation know! Obviously its a wonderful feeling!

Side note- My birthday is on May 4th!

China: The Second Year Begins!

Ive been in China for a while now and its good to be back here in Changchun. Of course seeing Laarni greeting me at the airport and her enormous belly as she is now around five, going on six, months pregnant was great. We found out that we are having a boy and are already considering names for the baby- the front runner so far is Simon Zachary, with Zachary being a middle name.

So im now with a new teaching company and its definately different class to the last one i was with ie Superb. Less hours and more pay! Saturday i work 7 one hour lessons, Sunday 6 one hour lessons. Then on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday five one hour lessons spread between the three days. Of course this leaves Thursday and Friday for me! The other teachers and management there are really friendly such as Darri , Lewis and Shannon.

This year promises to be the most exciting probably of my life- exciting and a bit daunting as we welcome a new member to the world and our family!

Once More Into The Breach....

A few more days to go til i return to China for another year of teaching and i cant wait. This year it should be less stressful with workload but definately more exciting as Laarni is expecting to give birth around June/July time so we are both looking forward to that! Havent really thought of baby names yet for a boy or a girl so we will be discussing that im sure, with suggestions from friends and family of course not far behind! Ive been back home in England for around a month or so and its been really great back with the family, seeing everyone getting along with their own thing. Two of my sisters who had babies last year have seen their babies shoot up and it was a real surprise as to how much they have grown!

Ive finally upgraded from my Samsung laptop which ive had for around four years now and have got a HP Pavilion dv2000 laptop, courtesy of my Dad, and ive got to say its an amazing and quality one. Also have a new PS2. No reason for me to get a PS3 at the moment as there are few games out for it anyway. Maybe when i return in a year back to England! Ive also picked up Kingdom Hearts 2, Pro Evolution Soocer 6 and Final Fantasy XII so plenty of gaming action there to be getting on with!

My flight details have come through and ive just been accepted for my Visa today to enter China so its all set to go. Cant wait to see Laarni again! Im bringing her an assortment of stuff from the Uk so i hope she will like what ive got for her! Thats if i can pack my suitcase!

Time for Relaxation!

Ive been back home with my family in England for a week now and relaxing! TV doesnt really seem to have changed much in my year absence, though people are raving about Heroes so ill probably get the dvds when I go back to China! Its good to actually watch live football with the Premiership and the Champions League etc on TV. Aston Villa, my favourite team, arent really setting the world alight at the moment but I have faith in O Neill, his ideas and the players he has brought in. Im expecting Villa to survive in the Premiership and big changes in the Summer regarding transfers.

Final Fantasy XII comes out tomorrow - Feb 23rd - and although I bought a copy back in China, it was riddled with bugs so im hoping to get the English version before I return to be with Laarni in China. Also ive got a copy of Kingdom Hearts 2 and Pro Evolution Soccer 6 which came out while i was away which were presents from one of my sisters.  Ive missed out getting computer magazines so I get a bit behind the times but the Internet in China is sometimes very fast so I keep up to date that away.

Another passion of mine is Anime and ive been able to keep up to date with downloads for Bleach, Naruto, Death Note, D Grayman, Busou Renkin and Bakumatsu Kikansetsu Irohanihoheto. Thats a lot of CD RWs! Thank God the fillers have ended in Naruto with the Hurricane Chronicles just starting with the events after the time jump. I have to say Bleach though is my fave anime at the moment, even its Bounto filler arc was pretty interesting. The whole Vizards, Arrancar etc and Ichigos inner struggle with the demon within, plus how everyone else is getting by, is pretty engrossing

Finally ive actually put content on my Myspace havent I? Haha, only took my a year or so didnt it? Enjoy! Oh the song playing is by Angela Aki called Eyes on Me. Its a reworking of the same titled song by Faye Wong for the Final Fantasy VIII computer game. Angela Aki has a voice which is stunning.

No Place Like Home...

WOoooOoo. Its been a long time since i posted hasnt it? A lot has happened as well.

Ive finished my contract for a year in China with a certain company that shall remain nameless. I had no problem with the schools, universities, kindergardens etc that i taught at- the children, young adults and adults were amazing. Always interested in me and their willingness to learn oral English. I dont want to go into the company too much, but suffice to say, when I return to Changchun in two or so weeks time, it wont be to the company. Ive been back in England for around a day and a half now. I left Changchun on Wednesday (Valentines Day!) but flight was delayed for 10, yes 10 hours, and had to stay in Beijing overnight and catch a flight back to Heathrow on the Thursday. Normally the flight takes around 11 hours, but this time it took around 13 with air traffic and a backlog at Heathrow. Still trying to adjust to the time difference!

Ive really enjoyed my time in China. Ive met many people who i consider friends and hopefully ive left a mark on them and also the people I have taught during my year there. I want to thank Ryan, a fellow English guy, for helping me out when i first came to Changchun even though he is a glory hunting Man Utd fan! Ali is another person id like to mention who is a fellow Pro Evolution Soccer fan and we would pass the time slugging it out playing PES whenever we could, which i think kept us both sane during dealings with the company and the workload. Other people such as Peter, Vanessa, Francis, Anthony, Rhona, Lily, Dina are just a small number of names id also like to mention for making my stay a pleasant one.

Last but certainly not least is the person that I met only a few days after arriving in China which was Laarni. Admittedly i was pretty drunk and oblivious to most of what was going on around me on a certain night in March, but apparently with one hand grasped around a beer bottle, my eyes were continually fixated upon her. As we got to know one another, I began to realise just what a kind and caring person she is, considerate to everyone and putting others first before herself. As many of our friends and family know, Laarni is pregnant and expecting to give birth around June- July time!

Cant wait til i return to China!

Im Alive!

Hello to all that know me. Wow, its been a long time without me posting anything. Sorry about that. Well its coming up to the end of October and so ive been here around seven months in China with my experience here being outstanding. Havent been online due to internet problems, teaching and the fact that i suffered from being ill- though i have been improving over the past month so thats good. The doctors here figured out in the end that i had two stomach ulcers and intestinal bleeding which sounds nasty, and led to me not really eating, or being ill when i had some bread etc. However after some injections and the medication i took ive been eating more varied things and having no ill effects. So its all good now. Its getting really cold here in Changchun and apparently gets even worse so i finally got a coat the other day. Teaching is great. Im teaching at a university and the young adults there are enthusiastic and fun to teach. I also teach at a Middle School and a Kindergarten as well- obviously they each have there own differences and rewards. Laarni and I are still together and getting stronger. She will probably go back to the Phillipines to see her family and friends as she hasnt seen them for a while so thatll be nice for her. I plan to send some presents back home to my sisters and their babies.I hope everything is fine back home.

The Story So Far...

I am alive!!
Sorry for the long absence with no update. I have been busy with teaching, with the girlfriend or with my friends! Getting online and updating my blog has been far from my minds but I hope I can rectify that from now on! I have been here in Changchun for around four months now plus been in a relationship with Laarni for that time too and on both fronts things are goin excellently. We are coming up to a teaching break so the classes wont be as think and fast, though kindergarten continues throughout the summer I think so we will have to see. I need to speak to my company I think as Laarni has proposed that we go to the Filipines and see her family and friends as she is excited, as I am, to show me to them! Obviously I want to show Laarni to my family and friends too so a trip to England will happen in the future too. I definately need to buy a camera to show myself, friends, Laarni and the sights here to you people that visit this blog!

Busy Busy Busy

As the title suggests teaching has taken up a lot of my time and people who know me know that im not that good at keeping people appraised of my situation. What with teaching and either sleeping or going to bars and clubs with friends, or of course spending as much time with my girlfriend as possible, trying to log on to the Net and my blog- I seem to forget! Well the World Cup starts tonight with Germany kicking of the tournament as the home nation, probably wont be able to watch it though.  They will show it at about 1200 midnight here and im teaching from 8 til 6 tomorrow! However nothing will keep me away from England v Paraguay as on Sunday i am only teaching an hour! Woohoo! China is very hot at the moment- no longer teaching in my suits! Sometimes it rains though but the air is very humid and hot. Havent been getting much sleep lately at all, probably due to the warm weather!

A Bad Experience

Well as people know im now on my third motorola phone and very nearly today i might have had to buy my fourth. Today has been really hot, China is warming up and the summer is nearly upon us, so the wearing of shorts is now needed at least. Oh i usually teach in my suits but not for the last week or so- too hot!So i did a class this morning at a college and it went great- only two hours. Then i had a one hour english corner in the afternoon. English corner is basically an hour or so of games, songs etc for kids to enjoy and the foreign teacher takes the lead. However today i didnt make it to the class as i had, as the title says, a bad experience with a taxi driver. He took me nowhere near where the place was, despite my company giving me the chinese name etc which i showed him. I must have been in the car for ages, it came up to around 40 or so Yuen, which is staggering as taxi rides i usually take only cost from 5 to 20 yuen. The place i was supposed to go was only 10 or so minutes away. However as i paid it and got out of the car, my phone and keys slipped out. As i realised this the taxi driver tried to pull away, but i chased him down and he stopped the car. I looked for the phone in the car- nowhere. the driver looked nervous. a passing chinese guy saw something was wrong and said something to the driver. I looked at the guy and did the phone sign next to my earand then i pointed inside the taxi. Lo and behold the keys and phone were on the seat, despite me looking in the taxi. The driver had obviously tried to keep it , but the ruse had failed.

ARGHH!Oh well phone number four will have to wait for another day i spose!

The Girlfriend

Ive been in China for around three months now and for pretty much most of the time ive been seeing a filipino woman called Laarni. As soon as i arrived in Changchun i made loads of friends and they introduced me to the various clubs, bars etc that Changchun has to offer. I think after the second week or so a girl caught my eye, and yes i admit i might have been the worse for wear in the drinking front, but i couldnt get her out of my head and things have happened since then. Laarni told me the other day that she wasnt even looking for a boyfriend that night, it was just a night to go out with her friends, yet it was her friends that persuaded her to at least get my number that night. Things escalated of course as we have spent more and more time together and sometimes just getting through the teaching is a breeze during the week as  i know that ill be seeing Laarni again! Damn im sounding so soppy! Shes funny, intelligent, beautiful and someone who i can see being with for a long time. I simply love her!

Working On The Weekends

Another difference between China and England- working on the weekend. Yes i know you get people who do work on the weekend, in some schools, but here in China they schedule even more classes during Saturday and Sunday than any other day of the week. Left my place at 5:30 this morning and returned at 8 at night from a place called Gong Zhu Ling. Nice place and the classes were great. Tomorrow im working from 8 til 4 in a school in Changchun. Its coming up to the holidays so a break will definately be welcome!
Surprised i have my new third phone with me still after one day of purchase. Quality.

Not Again...

Not Again...

Well, i bought a phone here in China because i had to. A Motorola one which was pretty damn decent and had it for about two weeks or so, then it was stolen. Bought another one the exact same model and well, did pretty well i spose, seeing as how ive lost it today, along with the key to the flat. DAMN! Lost it in a taxi and theres no getting that back im sure of it. SO ill probably buy yet another phone tonight, and get the mickey taken out of me once again for getting my third phone in three months. ARRGHHH!

My Very First Blog Entry

Finally got onto the internet and decided to write something! Well ive been in China over two months now and enjoying my time here! Im here for a year as people who know me know that! I havent had any bad experiences, except my phone being stolen- but i went out the next day and bought the very same one again! I need my phone! Teaching is great- i teach all ages from Kindergarten up to adults as well. Im based in a city called Changchun which is nothing like i imagined it. it has great restaurants- loads of foreign ones like French etc which is good! The Bars and clubs are excellent too, with the Coors Bar, Classic Bar, Mayflower and San Marco the places where i go the most! I havent mastered the chinese language yet with only a few words learnt, but people like talking to me in English anyway, as they are naturally curious as i am a forienger but also as i am a different colour, Anyhow im off so see you guys later!
